Local Governing Body Resolution in Respect of School Age Refugee Children
It is noted that as a result of the war in Ukraine, there is a large number of school age refugee children in the local area.
Chew Valley School has been asked by the Secretary of State for Education, by the Bath and North East Somerset local authority and by the Lighthouse Schools Partnership trustees, as well as by local sponsors, to accommodate those children at Chew Valley School.
The Governors of Chew Valley School hereby resolve that:
On an emergency basis, the school will endeavour to accommodate refugee children, even if that takes the number of children in a year group above the capacity of 210 children (to a maximum of six over the Pupil Admission Number of 210).
This applies to refugee children either under the Homes for Ukraine scheme or under the Ukraine Family Scheme.
The decision to accommodate additional children will be exercised solely by the Governors, and solely on a discretionary basis, but may be delegated to the Headteacher.
The Governors further note that the request to accommodate refugee children, and the concomitant additional funding, solely applies to those coming from Ukraine. The Governors deplore the fact that this has not been extended to other refugee groups, and hereby call on the Secretary of State for Education to extend this to all refugee groups.
