Why Securing Key Curriculum Knowledge Matters

A strong grasp of essential subject knowledge underpins long‑term progress, confidence, and enjoyment of learning. When key ideas are secure, students can make connections, apply their understanding, and move confidently into more complex content.

Learning is sequenced so that new knowledge builds on what has come before. Gaps in this sequence can make later content harder to access and reduce confidence. Ensuring students understand core concepts at the right time supports deeper learning, independence, and stronger outcomes.

Our Approach

We aim to help students secure the essential knowledge in each subject, while recognising that classroom learning, rich with explanation, modelling, and discussion, cannot be fully replicated independently. Our approach is designed to be fair, accessible, and manageable for students and staff.

Phase 1: Revisiting Learning Through Recall and Responsive Teaching

Phase 1 focuses on strengthening long‑term understanding by revisiting prior learning and addressing gaps as they appear.

Recall Starters

Every lesson begins with a short recall activity designed to:

  • Reinforce prior learning
  • Strengthen long‑term memory
  • Show what students can remember securely
  • Highlight forgotten or misunderstood content

This builds a routine of regular, manageable consolidation.

 

Ongoing Revisiting

Teachers continually return to key content across units to:

  • Keep earlier learning active
  • Build stronger links between ideas
  • Reduce the loss of learning over time

This ensures learning is reinforced well beyond the original lesson.

Addressing Misconceptions

Through responsive teaching, staff adapt their teaching based on what students show they know. This allows teachers to:

  • Spot misconceptions quickly
  • Re‑teach or clarify when needed
  • Adjust explanations
  • Provide targeted practice

Addressing misunderstandings early prevents them from becoming long‑term barriers.

Phase 2: Digital Access to Learning Materials based on core curriculum concepts

Phase 2 ensures all students can access clear, reliable learning materials both in and out of lessons. High‑quality digital resources support students with consolidating knowledge, catching up after absence, and deepening their understanding.

This phase ensures that every student whatever their learning needs, strengths, or starting points can engage fully with the curriculum. It promotes independent learning, strengthens confidence, and creates consistency across departments. Students also develop the effective use of digital tools, an essential skill that supports success both in school and in future pathways.
