"Students make an excellent contribution to the local community and the school. The school council has a number of groups including a ‘chicken team’ who look after chickens and auction the eggs."
Ofsted 2011
The School Council at Chew Valley is based on the Learning to Lead Initiative:
It involves the whole school community from the beginning
Is based on self-election
Operates through self-managing teams
Involves training every council member in the skills needed to work together independently
The teams were formed following an online survey where all students were asked their views on the school and we had a morning off timetable to put ideas together on what could be done in relation to key areas.
Each term there is a school Council Forum where the whole council gets together and discusses issues that involve all members. There is a newsletter that comes out once a term and weekly team meeting.
