Seismic Faults and Sacred Sanctuaries
Prof Iain Stewart gave an illustrated lecture in the hall on 6th December, attended by over 80 enthusiasts from the West of England Geological Association, including some of our ex-students, sixth form and staff. It was arranged by Dr Doug Robinson, a lecturer and Bristol University whose own sons attended the school. The lecture, entitled "Seismic Faults and Sacred Sanctuaries", looked at how many sacred sites in Greece and Turkey are built on active earthquake faultlines. It gave our 6th formers some insight into the nature of a real academic lecture!
Professor Stewart, from Plymouth University, was an excellent speaker. He has presented countless BBC TV documentaries (Power of the Planet, How Earth Made Us, Rough Science) and very much enjoyed his visit to Chew Valley where he was reacquainted with his old student housemates, Mr Brown and Mr Hawkins!
