PE GCSE Revision
Recommended websites: bbc bitesize.
Top tips for revising this subject:
- Revision cards – keep notes short, use mind maps, visual images
- Use examples in all answers but remember these must refer to healthy, active lifestyles not just sports.
- Healthy, active lifestyles means physical activity, diet, social well being, happiness, access to green space and being able to cope with everyday demands.
Make sure that you check the question word: -
State: - e.g. State the functions of the skeleton – movement, support, blood production, protection.
Describe: - e.g. Describe the functions of the skeleton – the skeleton offers protection to our main organs, it allows us to move through the joints, it produces blood in the long bones.
Explain:- Explain two functions of the skeleton – One function of the skeleton is to protect our major organs. It does this by surrounding them often using flat bones for example the skull/cranium protects our brain. A second function of the skeleton is movement. We are able to move because our skeleton has joints where two or more bones meet. Movement happens at the joints because the structure of the joints allows it. For example our elbow is a hinge joint and the ligaments allow this to flex and extend.
Analyse:- This should involve a comparison looking at the issue from more than one side. E.g. Analyse the effectiveness of the skeleton in allowing movement – The skeleton allows us to move our bodies where two or more bones meet at joints. We have three different types of joints and the effectiveness of the different types varies. For example fixed joints, which can be found in the skull offer no movement at all as they are there to protect the brain so are not very effective at all in allowing movement. However there are many more synovial joints in the body which move freely. An example of a synovial joint would be the ball and socket joint found at the hip or shoulder. This joint allows movement in several different directions so is very effective in allowing movement.
You can see that the question word should also tell you how much you should be writing.
- Put cards up around house where you can see them, eg when eating breakfast
- Musical revision aid available from PE Faculty, borrow and record for yourself
- Stick labels on bones and muscles of your parents, friends to help learn these
