The Chicken has Landed!

Enormous excitement accompanied the arrival of our very own chickens.  Four pullets have taken up accommodation in the school grounds as part of the School Community Council initiative, Learning to Lead.

The School Council Chicken Team began life six months ago when a determined group of lower school boys, Lewis Horseman, Oliver Wright and Noah Tyler, gave a presentation to senior staff in the school explaining the costs and potential benefits of keeping chickens.

The boys had researched matters carefully.  A large hopper feeding mechanism ensures automatic food supply every day.  A similar provision is made for water.  The boys had devised a rota for week-end and holiday duties.  Most impressive of all was the research into hen coops and the commitment of the boys (and Lewis’ Dad) to building suitable accommodation for the hens ensuring safety from predators.

‘From their initial vision, the three lads now have a team of 20 enthusiastic members of the chicken team.  And the chickens have taken up residence in their all mod cons accommodation – our very own Cluckingham Palace!’

The school awaits the arrival of fresh eggs with excitement.
