An update on the Wind Turbine Project

In the wake of the Gulf Oil disaster, President Obama has said that America and the rest of the world must now focus on using less oil and other fossil fuels. We are already committed to this point of view.  It is now almost 2 years since our very own green energy  wind turbine was installed

·    Since installation we have earned £750 from FIT’s or Feed in Tariffs which are paid by the Government at a fixed rate depending on how much electricity is generated.

·    We have generated 4,655kWh of electricity, saving £600 on our electricity bill

·    We have also prevented more than 2.5 metric tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere. This is a huge amount which would have contributed to global warming

·    The turbine  is, of course, used extensively as a teaching aid along with the live feed from the turbine in reception and on the school website.

The turbine project is continuing to raise money to help cut down our electricity bills and reduce  our carbon footprint. In June, Ian Roderick of Target 80, based in Chew Magna,  came into school to donate a cheque for £300. This has been used to install a thermostat on every one of the 20 water heaters in school. These heaters were switched on 24/7 throughout the whole year. Now they are switched on at 9am and switched off at 4pm. They are programmed to be switched off over the weekends and during holiday times. This will be a huge saving on electricity bills as well as on money spent on frequent servicing of the heaters and replacement of the elements. Rosie Filer and Rory Ellis received the cheque on behalf of the whole school.
