Active IQ

Active IQIn September this year six sixth form pupils completed the Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing.

The course, led by Mr. Edwards, is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ), at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

This qualification provides the knowledge and skills to enable students to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective gym based sessions.

Chew Valley is the only state school in the South West that is able to provide the facilities and staff to run the course.

The successful candidates pictured are; Sam Ryan, Jamie Smith, Ben Henley, Ben Gordon and Sam Teale.

One student, Sam Teale, has already taken the initiative and now works part time at Chew Valley Leisure Centre. Sam commented ‘The qualification has given me the confidence to use my knowledge and put it into a practical situation’

Jo Hibbert, Head of Physical Education, commented.

‘We are extremely fortunate to have firstly a member of staff who is qualified to deliver this course and secondly a close working relationship with the leisure centre which allows the students to access the fitness room.  The opportunity for Chew valley sixth formers to gain a vocational qualification in the fitness industry truly gives them a head start’.

Previous candidates have progressed to achieve Level 3 Gym Instruction and one former student, Megan Wintle, has recently gained a certificate in working with children, allowing the leisure centre to set up Teen Gym sessions which in turn benefits children throughout the Chew Valley area.
